If you want your child to have a top-notch smile and oral health, then there are things you should do regularly to keep their mouth clean and healthy. Now, this might sound a little tricky, but it’s easier than you might think. Our dentist, Dr. Kisha Steele Mitchell, is happy to help you care for your baby’s oral health by encouraging you to do the following things:

-Clean the gums when they don’t have teeth yet. You can do this by wiping their gums with a wet, clean washcloth after each feeding. This can help wash bacteria away that can harm the gums and affect your baby’s oral health.

-Clean the teeth when they start growing into place. Just use a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush and water to scrub your baby’s little chompers twice a day. Be gentle as you brush. As you clean their teeth, you can use child toothpaste that doesn’t contain fluoride and that is safe to swallow if you desire.

-Bring them in for their first checkup at an early age. It’s best to bring them in around their first birthday or six months after their first tooth popped out of the gums. This appointment can help your baby familiarize themselves with the dental team and office and it can allow you to learn more about how to properly care for your baby’s teeth and gums.
